The name "Buffalo Soldier" was a nickname given to African American soldiers by the Kiowa, Cheyenne, and Apache tribes. These soldiers were organized by Congress shortly after the Civil War in 1866 to serve as a peacetime military. There were four outfits formed to fight the Indians and protect the settlers. They were the Ninth and Tenth Cavalry and the Twenty-fourth and Twenty-fifth Infantry. Mark Matthews was the oldest living Buffalo Soldier who died at 111 years old in Washington D.C. in 2005.
